Preparing the course for fall
In his October update, Golf Course Superintendent Rusty Hill reports that the course received less than one inch of rain over the preceding 90 days. The maintenance team has adjusted irrigation to prioritize key areas as available water becomes more limited.
As temperatures fall, Bermuda and Zoysia grasses begin slowing their growth and preparing for winter dormancy. Members may notice the course’s summer green becoming more muted. The team is raising mowing heights on fairways and roughs to help protect the grass through winter and continuing fall pre-emergent applications to help prevent winter weeds such as Poa annua.
The new putting green is being maintained at the same height of cut as the course’s other greens. Heights will increase as needed with cooler temperatures.
How members can help
- Spread out cart traffic on fairways instead of following the same tracks as the cart ahead.
- Keep carts on the concrete paths around all par-3 holes and near tee boxes and greens.
Warm-season grasses recover more slowly in cooler weather, so these small steps help limit wear. Thank you for helping care for the course this fall.
