Event Details

Event Date: Monday, June 17th | Time: 5:30 PM

Join the Brickyard Ladies on June 17th at 5:30 PM for an engaging discussion of The Hot Zone by Richard Preston—a chilling true story that reads like a medical thriller.

About the Book:

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston The Hot Zone opens in 1980 with Charles Monet, a Frenchman living in Western Kenya. After exploring the remote Kitum Cave on Mount Elgon, Monet falls violently ill—vomiting, hemorrhaging, and ultimately dying in a Nairobi hospital. His physician, Dr. Shem Musoke, also becomes gravely ill after exposure to Monet’s blood and vomit.

The diagnosis? Marburg virus—a lethal member of the filovirus family, which includes the even deadlier Ebola Sudan and Ebola Zaire.

Preston explores the terrifying reality of these viruses:

  • Marburg: Kills 1 in 4 victims

  • Ebola Sudan: 50% fatality rate

  • Ebola Zaire: Up to 90% fatality rate

These viruses attack every organ system, causing extreme internal bleeding and fatal clots. Like AIDS, they’re transmitted through direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids—often jumping from monkeys to humans.
